I’ve long been fascinated by the geodesic domes created by the architect R Buckminster Fuller. So it was inevitable really that sooner or later I was going to have to make one. So, not being an architect I was never going to get commissioned to design a building based on a geodesic dome, and not owning enough spare land to build on for the hell of it, it had to fulfil some criteria of scale ie, small, and have some use. Hence a geodesic glass terrarium/planter.

This was a labour of love. On the face of it it’s pretty simple, a lot of triangles soldered together. But being a one off, I didn’t have a form to build on as you would with a lampshade. So all it took was many many hours and lots and lots of masking tape to temporarily hold all the pieces together while I soldered them in place.

Was it worth it? Well it was one of those things that just had to be done, and I’m pleased with the result. Will I ever make another one? Probably only if someone offers me lots and lots of money!

It measure approx. 18 inches in diameter by approx. 11 inches high.
